It was narrated to me by Moḥammed bin al-Ḥassan, who said – it was narrated to me by Moḥammed bin al-Ḥassan al-Ṣaffār, from ʿAlī bin Ḥassān al-Wāṣiṭi, from his uncle ʿAbd al-Raḥmān bin Kathīr al-Hāshimi – the servant of Moḥammed ibn ʿAlī:1

From Abī ʿAbd Allāh عليه السلام, who said: One day, ‘Amīr al-Mu’minīn عليه السلام was seated alongside his son Muhammad, when he said: Oh Moḥammed, bring me a container in which is water, so I can perform ablution for prayer.
So Moḥammed came to him with water, so he poured water with his right hand onto his left and said: ‘In the Name of Allāh, who made the water pure and did not Make it impure (Bismillah, alathi jaʿal al-mā’ ṭahūra wa lam yajʿalahu najsā).
Then he did istinjā’ (a purification of his private parts) and said: Oh Allāh! Fortify my loins and make it chaste, and veil my private parts, and forbid me from the Fire (Allāhumma ḥaṣṣin faraji, wa aʿiffahu, wastur ʿowrati waḥaramni ʿala al-nār).
Then he rinsed his mouth, and said: Oh Allāh! Make me meet my proofs on the day I meet You, and make my tongue to speak with Your remembrance (Allāhumma laqqinni ḥujjati yawma alqāka, wa aṭliq lisāni bi-dhikrika).
Then he rinsed his nose and said: Oh Allāh! Do not forbid upon me the aroma of the Paradise, and make me to be from the ones who would smell its aroma and smell and scent and its perfumes (Allāhumma lā tuḥarrim ʿalayya rīḥa al-jannati wajʿalni mimman yashammu rīḥaha wa rowḥaha wa rayḥānaha ṭībaha).
Then he (as) washed his face and said: Oh Allāh! Whiten my face on the day You blacken the faces, and do not blacken my face on the day You whiten the faces (Allāhumma bayyidh wajhi yawma taswaddu fīhi al-wujūh, wa lā tusawwid wajhi yawma tabyadhu al-wujūh).
Then he washed his right hand, and he said: Oh Allāh! give me my book in my right hand, and eternity in the Gardens by my left, call me to account with an easy reckoning. (Allāhumma aʿṭīni kitābi bi-yamīni wa al-khulda fi al-jināni bi-yasāri wa ḥāsibni ḥisāban yasīra)
Then he washed his left hand, and he said: Oh Allāh! do not give me my book in my left hand, and do not make it be chained to my neck, and I take refuge in You from the segments of the Fire (Allāhumma lā tuʿṭīni kitābo bi-shimāli wa lā tajʿalhā maghlūlatan ila ʿunuqi wa aʿūdhu bika min muqaṭṭaʿati al-nayrān).
Then he wiped his head, and he said: Oh Allāh! Cover me by Your Mercy, and Your Blessings, and Your Forgiveness (Allāhumma ghashini bi-raḥmatika wa barakātika wa ʿafwika).
Then he his feet, and he said: Oh Allāh! Make me to be steadfast upon the path on the day the feet would slip, and make my quest in what Pleases You from me, Oh Most Merciful of the Merciful. (Allāhumma thabbitni ʿala al-ṣirāṭi yawma tazillu fīhi all-aqdāmu wa ajʿal saʿyi fīma yurdhīka ʿanni, yā arḥam al-rāḥamīn).
Then he (as) raised his head and looked at Moḥammed, and he said: ‘O Moḥammed! The one who performs his ablution like my ablution, and says similar to what i said, Allāh, Mighty and Majestic, would Created for him, for every drop (of water used), an Angel who would extol His Holiness, and glorify Him, and exclaim His Greatness, and Allāh, the Most High, would write for him the rewards of that, up to the Day of Judgement’.
