Al-‘Āmāli, Al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, The Ninth Assembly – Ḥadīth #11

It was narrated to us by Jaʿfar bin Moḥammed bin Mansūr رحمه الله, who said – it was narrated to us by al-Ḥussain bin Moḥammed bin ʿAmmār, who said – it was narrated to us by Abū Aḥmed Moḥammed bin Ziyād al-Azdi, from Abān bin ʿUthmān, from ʿIkramah, from ibn ʿAbbās, who said:

The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله said: Whoever desires to live as i live and die as i die, and enter the Paradise promised to myself, and hold firm onto the stick of my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, where He will say to him, ‘Be, and it shall be’ – then let him love ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, and emulate the successors from his children; for they are my progeny. They were created from my mud. To Allāh I complain about their enemies within my nation, the ones who deny their merits, who break ties of nearness with them. By Allah, the one who kills my son – al-Ḥussain – after me, Allāh does not grant my intercession to them.

Al-‘Āmāli, Al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, The Ninth Assembly – Ḥadīth #10

It was narrated to us by ʿAlī bin Aḥmed bin ʿAbd Allāh bin Aḥmed bin Abī ʿAbd Allāh al-Barqi, who said – it was narrated to us by my father, from his grandfather Aḥmed bin Abī ʿAbd Allāh, who said – it was narrated to me by Sulaymān bin Muqbil al-Madīni, who said – it was narrated to me by Mūsa bin Jaʿfar, from his father Jaʿfar bin Moḥammed, from his father Moḥammed bin ʿAlī, from his father ʿAlī bin al-Ḥussain, from his father al-Ḥussain bin ʿAlī:

From his father ‘Amīr al-Mu’minīn عليه السلام, who said: I entered upon The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله while he was at the mosque of Qubbā, and with him was a group of his companions. When he (the Prophet) saw me, his face filled with joy and he smiled until I could see the whiteness of his teeth gleaming. He then said: ‘To me oh ʿAlī, to me oh ʿAlī’, where he did not stop approaching me until his thigh was joined with my thigh (i.e. standing right next to me). Then he turned towards his companions and said: Oh my companions, I present to you The Mercy (al-Raḥmā) by presenting ʿAlī to you. Oh my companions, indeed ʿAlī is from me and I am from him, his spirit is my spirit, his mud is my mud, he is my brother and my heir, and my caliph over my nation during my life and after my death. Whoever obeys him has obeyed me, and whoever endorses him endorses me, and who ever opposes him opposes me.

I reported from al-Ṣādiq Jaʿfar bin Moḥammed عليهما السلام, that he said: Verily, Allāh has a region named ‘The Revenge’. If Allāh gave his servant some wealth, and he does not take out from it the rights of Allāh, Mighty and Majestic – Allāh makes a region from within the aforementioned region to dominate him. Causing that fortune to become ineffective, whereupon he dies and abandons it.

From al-Ṣādiq, Jaʿfar bin Moḥammed عليهما السلام, who said: There is nothing of reward that carries on after a man dies except three things.
1. An on-going Charity which continues during his life, in which the reward carries on after his death.
2. A sunnah2 which guides that he carries out, which others act upon after his death.
3. And a virtuous child that seeks forgiveness [from Allāh] on his behalf.

From ‘Amīr al-Mu’minīn عليهم السلام, who said: When the scholars and wise-men wrote to each other, they would mention three things without a fourth.
1. Whoever has the afterlife as his concern, Allāh takes care of the worldly life concerns for him.
2. Whoever improves [the condition] of the non-apparent, Allāh improves [the condition] of his from what is apparent.
3. And whoever improves [the relationship] between himself and Allāh, Mighty and Majestic, Allāh improves [the relationship] between himself and the people.

Al-‘Āmāli, Al-Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, The Ninth Assembly – Ḥadīth #5

I heard al-Ṣādiq, Jaʿfar bin Moḥammed عليهما السلام narrate from his father, from his forefathers عليهما السلام, who said: One day, the Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله said to his companions: ‘Which of you fast all the time?’
Salmān رحمة الله عليه said: ‘I do, Oh Messenger of Allāh!’
The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله then said: ‘Which of you remain awake during the night [in worship]?’
Salmān replied: ‘I do, Oh Messenger of Allāh!’
He (the Prophet) said: ‘Which of you complete [reciting] the Qur’ān every day?’
Salmān replied: ‘I do, Oh Messenger of Allāh!’
One of the Prophet’s companions became angered, and said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allāh! Salmān is a Persian, who wants to gloat over us, the people of Quraysh. You asked us, ‘Which of you fast all the time? and he said ‘I’ – while most days he eats. And you asked us, ‘Which of you remain awake during the night [in worship]?’ and he said ‘I’ – while most nights he is asleep. And you asked us, ‘Which of you complete [reciting] the Qur’ān every day?’ and he said ‘I’ – while most of the day he is silent.’
The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله replied: ‘Silence, so-and-so, for how far you are from the like of Luqmān the Wise! Ask him, and he will explain to you.’
The companion then asked Salmān: ‘Oh Abā ʿAbd Allāh! Did you not claim that you fast all the time?’
Salmān replied: ‘Yes.’
He said: ‘But I have seen you eating most days!’
Salmān replied: ‘It is not where [your mind] has gone. I fast three [days] in [every] month, while Allāh, Might and Majestic, says: ‘Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof‘.1 And I join the month of Sha’ban [in fasting] with the Month of Ramadhān, so this is how I have fast all the time.’
He then asked: ‘Did you not claim that you remain awake during the night [in worship]?’
Salmān replied: ‘Yes.’
He said: ‘But most of the nights you are asleep!’
Salmān replied: ‘It is not where [your mind] has gone. Rather, I have heard my beloved Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله say: ‘Whoever spends the night [asleep] upon purity (ṭuhr), it will be as if he has spent the whole night awake [in worship]’. So I spend the night upon purity.’
He said: ‘Did you not claim that you complete [reciting] the Qur’ān every day?’
Salmān replied: ‘Yes.’
He said: ‘But you spend most of the days silent!’
Salmān said, ‘It is not where [your mind] has gone. Rather, I have heard my beloved Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله say to ʿAlī عليه السلام: ‘Oh Abā al-Ḥassan! Your similitude in my nation (ummah) is like that of […]

‘Amīr al-Mu’minīn عليه السلام passed by a man who was speaking in an obtrusive manner.
