It was narrated to us by Aḥmed bin al-Ḥassan al-Qaṭṭān, who said – it was narrated to me by Aḥmed bin Yaḥya bin Zakariyya al-Qaṭṭān, who said – it was narrated to us by Bakr bin ʿAbd Allāh, who said – it was narrated to us by Tamīm bin Bahlūl, who said – it was narrated to us by ʿAbd Allāh bin Ṣāliḥ bin Abī Salamah al-Nuṣaybini, who said – it was narrated to us by Abū ʿAwānah, from Abī Bishr, from Saʿīd bin Jubayr, from ʿĀ’isha, who said:

I was in the presence of The Messenger of Allāh صلى الله عليه وآله, whereupon he he went to ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib, and said: This [man] is the master (sayid) of the Arabs.
I said: Oh Messenger of Allāh, aren’t you the master of the Arabs?
He said: I am the master of the sons of Ādam, and ʿAlī is the master of the Arabs.
I said: What is a ‘master’ ?
He replied: One whose obedience to is obligatory, just as obedience to me has been made obligatory.

حدثنا أحمد بن الحسن القطان ، قال : حدثني أحمد بن يحيى بن زكريا القطان ، قال : حدثنا بكر بن عبد الله ، قال : حدثنا تميم بن بهلول ، قال : حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح بن أبي سلمة النصيبيني ، قال : حدثنا أبو عوانة ، عن أبي بشر ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن عائشة ، قالت : كنت عند رسول الله ( صلى الله عليه وآله ) ، فأقبل علي بن أبي طالب ، فقال : هذا سيد العرب ، فقلت : يا رسول الله ، ألست سيد العرب ؟ قال : أنا سيد ولد آدم ، وعلي سيد العرب ، فقلت : وما السيد ؟ قال : من افترضت طاعته كما افترضت طاعتي
